Thesis and dissertation binding

Nearly all students of Higher Education will at some point require a bound thesis.  Generally, most Universities ask for 1-2 proof copies to be submitted for evaluation.  These proof copies are 'soft' bound and not designed to be used for library display purposes or the final submission to the University.

After the soft bindings (and content!) have been evaluated, then the thesis would be hard bound.  Again, usually 2 copies are required for most Universities.  Hard bindings are pretty much the same as an excellent quality hard cover A4 book, and are designed to be stored and displayed within the University.

Universities have guidelines on the layout of the content before proceeding with binding.  Durham University as with most others, require a minimum text margin, font size and that text only be printed one sided.  A full list of the guidelines on thesis composition for Durham University can be found here.

  • Soft Bindings:

Soft bindings are possible up to 350 pages.  They will have a cloth bound spine, with a hard card rear and clear PVC cover.  It is advised to include an extra A4 sheet of paper per soft binding to include the thesis title, author and year so as to be seen through the front PVC cover.  Note:  Soft bindings will have no spine text!

  • Standard Hard Bindings:

Hard bindings are the finished submission copies.  These are usually submitted in a hard black (or other dark colour) cover, with printed gold text on the spine containing the Name, Year and Degree for example:

Harald Smith   PhD   2020

Hard bindings can also include a 'sleeve' for CD/DVD media to be submitted with the thesis.  This will be mounted at the back of the binding.

  • Special Hard Bindings:

These are the same as Standard Hard Bindings but include the degree title, for example:

My Dissertation about everything    Harald Smith    PhD    2020

Please be aware of the length of your spine text.  It mat be necessary to print a second line of text underneath the first.

Special Hard bindings can also include a 'sleeve' for CD/DVD media to be submitted with the thesis.
This will be mounted at the back of the binding.

Turnaround time and Payment

The usual turnaround time for thesis bindings depends on the payment method.  Most bindings should take no longer than 1 week from receiving the documents due to clearance of payment (Cheque/Bank transfer).  If documents are received and payment is taken in cash, the binding process should be no longer than 1 -2 days.

Local Durham students are advised to pay in cash where possible.  Internet customers or other customer paying by Cheque/Bank transfer should note this can take up to 5 working days to clear, which does not include binding time.

At the moment no payments can be accepted by credit card.

If you wish to pay by bank transfer, you will find details on the Thesis Order Form.

As we are not a VAT registered company, no VAT is to be added to the final price.
